The Struggle Is Real

People always seem to be reading self-help books.  Titles like: Eat to Live.  The 4-Hour Body. The Science of Getting Rich.  And every business person’s ‘favorite’: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

I do not have enough time to devote to improving myself that much, so I usually consume short articles instead.  The last few articles I have scanned have been about putting down technology.  Did you know that according to the internet the average smartphone user checks their device 150 times a day?

To try and keep myself average, I have implemented many strategies to minimize the time I am buried in a screen. After work, I now charge my phone far away so I am not tempted to sneak a peek.  All notifications have been turned off for the last 5 years.  I realized long ago that having a bunch of dings going off from my work email while in the delivery room was not going to endear me to many people.

But sometimes I still find myself aimlessly looking at my phone.  I have missed entire conversations with my wife before she realizes I haven’t heard a word.  I have been asked by my kids, “Why do you look at your phone so much.”

I really have no answer for them and I have no time to read an entire book to make one up either.  I just hope they have an app for that.

  1. I so appreciate this post, Adam. Most of us are obsessed with our phones, for no good reason. It’s an addiction…”aimlessly looking at my phone.” I think that most of the time I am aimlessly looking myself. Your last line was perfect…so funny! Good slice!

  2. The struggle sure is real. I have tried to put down the phone and be present with my kids too, but the 17th consecutive episode of the same Disney Junior show generally has me perusing through all things smart phone. Great Slice!
